Second Standing Balance: Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana

Half bound lotus intense stretch posture, ardha baddha padmottanasana, is a standing balance pose. It is the first time in the Ashtanga practice where we bring our foot into lotus position. Externally rotate your hip as much as possible. Reach around your back with the opposite hand as standing leg and grab your big toe, then fold forward, other hand to the mat or block in line with your toes. Stay for five breaths. Inhale half lift, exhale bring the hand that is on the floor to your waist, inhale rise up and then release. Modify by not folding forward, holding your elbow instead of your big toe, use a strap to assist your foot in half lotus, or take tree pose. If you have your big toe, and your knee is comfortable and points to the Earth, fold forward, but there is no rush. Listen to your body and be gentle with your knees.
