Garbha Pindasana

Garbha Pindasana, embryo in womb pose, is the first full lotus posture of the series and a fun balance just behind your sitting bones.  After the last vinyasa, take your legs into full lotus (first right foot in your left hip crease, then left over right into your right hip crease) and bring your arms through the space just behind each knee. This can be tricky and it may help to spray your arms with water or take the right arm through and use your right arm to help pull your left arm through. Bend your elbows and place your hands around your face. If full lotus is not possible with your body, take half lotus or even a comfortable cross legged position. Take your hands and hold your shins and bottom foot if modifying the legs or if it is too much to get your arms through your lotus. Take five breaths with your spine flexed and your Uddiyana and Mula bandhas and hips engaged to balance your body. Then the fun begins! Keep your spine rounded (you never want to roll on a flat back) and roll back and forth on your mat clockwise, exhale back inhale up, until you get all the way around to the front of your mat (5-8 times) to enter the next posture. If rolling all the way is too much omit it (don’t roll if you have back problems!) or just do a few rolls up and down. This pose strengthens the hips and abdominals and helps with balance and digestion.
