Utkatasana

Utkatasana, fierce pose or chair pose, is entered in the Ashtanga sequence after the two standing balance postures. Move through a sun salutation A but instead of staying in downdog for five breaths you inhale step or hop forward feet together between your hands, bend your knees, sit your hips back into an imaginary chair, and raise your arms up palms together and gaze at your thumbs if possible. Pull your abs in, ground through your feet, lengthen your tailbone, draw your shoulder blades down, open your chest and lengthen your spine. Take five breaths. Modify with less bend in your knees or lower your arms and have them shoulder distance apart or even in prayer position at your heart. You can also shift your hips back more, lower your thighs, and separate your arms and extend them forward as seen in many vinyasa classes. Utkatasana fires up your quads and abdominals and stretches your Achilles tendon.
